Mingde Heavy Hands Over Wood Chip Carrier NANJING EXPRESS

Mingde Heavy Industry yesterday delivered its first 4.7 million cubic feet wood chip carrier ‘NANJING EXPRESS’, the largest model in the world currently.

The vessel features 51,800 tons of Gross tonnage and a DWT of 69,300 tons. The manager and owner of the carrier is Singapore-based Nova Shipping & Logistics.

Compared with other similar bulk ships, the ‘NANJING EXPRESS’ possesses the characteristics of large capacity, high efficiency, environmental friendliness and energy saving.

The main difference between normal bulkers and wood chip carriers is that they have deep cargo holds and shallow draft to carry this kind of cargo, the density of which is lighter than cargo such as grain, coal or iron ore. The peculiarity of wood chips allows enlarged cargo spaces as they do not require topside tanks, because there is a minimal risk of cargo flow, compared to cargo such as grain.
