GMC Maritime Wins Repair Contract for Tanker Navion Norvegia

Teekay Shipping selected GMC to repair cracks in the offshore loading tanker Navion Norvegia, having sailed through the largest storms this winter. The Bahama registered offshore loading tanker belonging to Teekay Shipping is 265 metres long, with a tonnage of 130.000 DWT and contains 18 large oil tanks.

Having sailed thru several hurricane size storms this winter, small cracks have developed in the main deck. The ship owner had the desire to make repairs and brought Navion Norvegia to Stavanger in the middle of January.

GMC Maritime was commissioned to reveal and repair the damaged steel. The duty included erecting scaffolding inside the oil tanks to be able to perform welding work from underneath the deck. The height inside the oil tanks amount to 22 meters, and scaffolding materials had to be carried item by item through the inspection hatches. GMC also ensured maximum safety including guarded boarding gate on deck and fireguards down inside the tanks.

The commission has required much coordination, both of crew and equipment,” says section manager Terje Jekteberg in GMC Maritime. “The whole job was performed in four days, and the ship was ready for the next load from the Gullfaks field within the defined time frame.”
