Petrobras taps Strohm for up to 1,500-meter deepwater TCP trial offshore Brazil

Dutch thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) manufacturer Strohm has been hired on an assignment, covering the supply, qualification and offshore trial of thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) for water injection and gas lift applications in Brazil’s deepwater post-salt province, in a project that will test the technology at water depths of up to 1,500 meters.

Petrobras has booked Strohm and its subsidiary, Strohm Brasil, on a contract to supply thermoplastic composite pipe for the Brazilian post-salt cluster, with the agreement also entailing qualification testing, project engineering, field services, and support for offshore trials and installation.

The TCP, which will be used for water injection and gas lift applications offshore Brazil, at water depths of up to 1,500 meters, will be assessed under actual operating conditions, including handling and ability to be installed from typical pipe lay vessels in Petrobras’ fleet.

Made from carbon or glass fibre reinforced with polyethylene or polyamide, thermoplastic composite pipes are lighter and easier to handle than conventional flexible and rigid pipe systems, as their spoolable, non-corrosive design can provide long-term reliability while eliminating routine maintenance requirements, without compromising the ability to carry out ongoing pipeline integrity inspections.
