Petronas: PFLNG2 hull launched at SHI’s shipyard

Malaysian energy giant Petronas on Tuesday said it has launched the hull of its second floating LNG facility at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in Geoje Island, South Korea at the end of April.

The 393-metre-long hull was floated out from the Green Dock 3 to anchor at the quayside of the SHI shipyard signifying the near completion of the hull construction which commenced in June 2015, Petronas said in its statement.

Once completed PFLNG2 will have a total weight of 134,000 tonnes and will enable the liquefaction, production and offloading processing of natural gas in the Rotan field, 240 kilometers offshore Sabah.

Designed for water depth between 500 metres to 1500 metres deep the second FLNG unit has the processing capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum.

In February Petronas President and CEO, Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said the company has decided to re-phase the Petronas floating LNG 2 project, to be commissioned at a later date than originally planned.

The initial production start was set for 2018, however, costs cutting by Petronas caused by the depressed oil price environment led to the delay.
