Port of Damietta Attracts More Container Ships

Egypt’s Damietta Port has achieved an increase of up to 41% in the number of container ships received during the month of June this year compared to last year’s figures for the same month.

The monthly statement issued by the Central Administration of the Traffic indicated that the Damietta Port received 230 ships during the month of June this year, compared with 192 vessels during the month of June last year, an increase of 19.79%

The total volume of cargo handled at the port amounted 2.5 million tons during the same month compared to 2 million tons from the previous year.

In terms of container traffic Damietta Port received 113 container ships during the month of June 2014 compared to 80 vessels during June 2013, an increase of 41.25%

The number of containers at the port, handled at the port during the same month amounted 80,509 TEU, an increase of up to 34.14 when compared to last year’s figures of the same month.

The port authorities are investing significantly into the port’s capabilities so as to attract bigger vessels. Only last week, the port welcomed the giant containership CMA CGM Lyra.

Among the investments is that for a dredging operation performed in cooperation with Suez Canal Authority to maintain the navigation in the access channel safe for accommodating giant vessels.
