Port of Venice Launches Tender for New Master Plan

The Venice Port Authority today kick started an international tender for the preparation of the new Port Master Plan, the instrument that will set the stage to allow the port to stay competitive until 2030 up through 2050.

Objectives of the Mater Plan include promotion of a sustainable use of the offshore port, encouraging private investment initiatives and strengthening of Porto Marghera, rationalization of the overall layout of the port and the individual terminals along with potential relocation of some port facilities.

In addition, the tender seeks projects that would help promote an environmental perspective of the port and further facilitate integration of the port with the nearby municipalities such as Chioggia and Mantova.

The move stems from the fact that the Porto Marghera Port Management Plan dates back to 1964, while the Cruise Terminal Port Management Plan dates back to 1908, creating a need to adopt development-planning tools in line with the current needs and redefine the strategic objectives for the medium and long term (2030-2050) to remain competitive.

The job will require taking into account the new local and national and European regulations but also the new economic scenarios and maritime developments in the world (eg. enlargement of the the Suez and Panama canals, increasing ship size, globalization of production and markets, etc.) all with the utmost respect of the planning instruments of municipalities (Cavallino-Treporti, Mira and Venice) that are part of the port.

The tender, which is open for participation of companies and experts around the world, is worth a total of EUR 1.5 million (USD 1.68 million).

The call is accompanied by a document containing the “Guidelines” that the Port Authority has outlined in recent years and featuring detailed development plans already shared with the port community and institutions.

The deadline for submission of bids is the 16th of November, 2015.
