Port Saint John: Expanding Growth Opportunities in Brazil

Expanding Growth Opportunities in Brazil

This month, Port Saint John’s competitive connectivity will be showcased to a transnational audience.

Representatives from Port Saint John, along with the Council of Atlantic Premiers (CAP) and regional industry leaders, will be visiting Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro from Oct. 18 to 26. Jim Quinn, president and CEO and Andrew Dixon, senior vice-president, planning and development, will be meeting with key industry and government leaders throughout their stay.

“Brazil is not a new market for our Port, but it is an important one. Potash Corp of Saskatchewan, one of our valued partners, is a major potash supplier for Brazil. That’s just one example of the wealth of opportunity in this region. We’re looking forward to forging new relationships, strengthening existing ones and really highlighting this Port as a logistics solution for getting goods to market,” Dixon said.

Among one-on-one meetings with key individuals in North-South trade, the delegation will be hosting two logistics seminars highlighting connectivity on Oct. 21 and 24. Port Saint John is the only port in Atlantic Canada with competitive rail options to connect to major population bases in both Canada and the United States. Saint John is also equidistant to Brazil in comparison to ports in New York and New Jersey.

This has been a growth year for Port Saint John, with two new global container connections and 100 per cent growth in container volumes. We’ve been active in developing the Brazilian container market for the past five years. In that time, the Port has had the support of strategic partners like the federal and provincial government. We’re proud to partner with them and play a role in growing our regional economy,” Dixon said.

Port Saint John is Eastern Canada’s largest port by tonnage and has a diverse cargo base, including dry and liquid bulk, break bulk, containers, and cruise.
