Report: Chittagong Congestion to Clear Up in Two Weeks

Bangladeshi port of Chittagong could soon clear up the congestion which started building up at the site in May 2017, local media said citing Chittagong Port Authority (CPA).

Officials reportedly informed that the port plans to undertake a number of measures to deal with the issues which arose due to an increase in seasonal imports at the port, less operational hours during Ramadan, and other factors including bad monsoon weather, equipment shortage and cyclonic storms.

Namely, Chittagong port would deal with the existing backlog of ships at its outer anchorage by maintaining the berthing time and serial of ships during unloading cargoes, adding another shift and introducing 24-hour unloading of cargoes.

Additionally, the port informed that it decided to increase the existing vessel length limits by five metres to 175 metres, to allow larger vessels to pass through the port channel at night, as well as  create more space at the yard for containers.

With the implementation of these measures, the situation at the port is expected to return to normal over the period of two weeks.
