Russia Exploring Fukushima Accident Effects
Research vessel ”Professor Khlyustin”

Russian  research vessel ”Professor Khlyustin” sailed out from Vladivostok on a 28-day expedition to explore the long-term effects of the accident at the Japanese nuclear power plant Fukushima-1.

The expedition was organized by State Institute of Oceanography as part of the Russian Geographical Society project ”Continued research to assess the radiological situation in the Sea of Japan and the Kuril-Kamchatka region of the Pacific Ocean in connection with the accident at Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant.”

This is the third expedition of the Society, being carried out two and a half years after one of the largest technogenic disasters in the world. The data obtained by scientists will allow continued monitoring of radioactive contamination in the region, and offer insight in the processes of transformation and accumulation of radionuclides in the ocean.

A deep cable winch was installed on board as part of the successful implementation of the planned program. It will take samples of the water and probe the ocean water at a depth of 6000 meters.
