SAF Wins Buffalo CDF 4 Contract
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District, awarded a $2.3 million contact to SAF Inc. of Akron, Ohio, July 23rd, to conduct maintenance repairs to Buffalo confined disposal facility dike (CDF) 4.
The work began on August 3rd and is scheduled to continue through the end of the 2016 construction season.
The CDF is located at the south end of Buffalo Harbor and was constructed in 1977 by building a stone perimeter dike from the Lake Erieshoreline, south of the Buffalo Harbor South entrance, to the lakeward end of the South Entrance Arm Breakwater.
The repair work consists of moving the large stones at the dike crest and placing them down-slope to fill voids. Smaller stones will be placed at the crest and also fill voids created by wave action and grouted to help lock everything together, creating a solid base to install cast-in-place concrete blocks at the dike crest.
New large stones will be placed against the cast-in-place blocks for greater structural integrity.
“Since the CDF was built, decades of storm wave action and freeze/thaw cycling have deteriorated and shifted the large stones on the dike crest,” said Geoff Hintz, USACE Buffalo District project manager. “This repair work will assure the CDF continues to function as originally designed.”
