SLB lines up offshore drilling work on Asian deepwater gas project

U.S.-headquartered technology player SLB has landed multiple deals for offshore drilling services at a gas development off the coast of Indonesia with the UAE-based Mubadala Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Company owned by the government of Abu Dhabi.

SLB’s contracts with Mubadala Energy are for the Tangkulo natural gas deepwater development and associated exploration and appraisal drilling activities in the Andaman Sea offshore Indonesia. The first gas is targeted before the end of 2028.

The U.S. company will work with the operator to deliver integrated drilling and well services across the full well life cycle, with the scope encompassing directional drilling, drilling fluids, cementing, wireline, slickline, coiled tubing, well testing, mud logging and upper and lower completions.

The integrated model is said to be designed to streamline execution while enhancing safety, reliability and operational performance. The project will leverage the firm’s offshore and deepwater technologies, including real-time downhole monitoring, to reduce operational risk, improve well placement and strengthen project economics.

SLB elaborates that these contracts were awarded through a competitive tender process and underscore the strategic importance of the Tangkulo development to Indonesia’s long-term energy security.

The Tangkulo gas field lies roughly 65 kilometers offshore North Sumatra, with over 2 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas-in-place.
