Spotted: Oak Spirit Starts Taking Shape at DSME

Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has laid the keel for Teekay’s second of nine LNG newbuilding vessels powered with M-type, Electronically Controlled, Gas Injection (MEGI) twin engines.

The keel-laying ceremony for the structure that once completed will sail under the name Oak Spirit was held on June 3rd, 2015. Upon completion, the LNG carrier will be on a charter contract with Cheniere.

Teekay’s first M-type LNG vessel, Creole Spirit, was floated out at DSME shipyard in South Korea on June 9. The vessel is expected to enter service early 2016.

Teekay is the first ship owner to order a MEGI-propelled LNG carrier, which are designed to be significantly more fuel-efficient and have lower emission levels than other engines currently being used in LNG shipping.

The MEGI vessels have a consumption of 100 tonnes, up to 30 tonnes lower when compared to the most efficient Dual Fuel Diesel Electric (DFDE) propulsion systems that have daily consumption in the region of 125 to 130 tonnes including sea margin.
