StreamTec and Worley team up on GW-scale North Sea hydrogen pipeline

Project & Tenders

Switzerland-based StreamTec Solutions has joined Worley in the execution team for an offshore pipeline that will connect green hydrogen obtained in the North Sea with the European mainland and onshore hydrogen infrastructure.

The gigawatt-scale AquaDuctus hydrogen pipeline to be located in the German North Sea will enable green hydrogen producers, particularly those linked to offshore wind, to transport hydrogen from offshore production sites to the European mainland.

It will form the core of an interconnected offshore hydrogen network linking Germany with neighboring North Sea countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, the UK and Norway. The project has been recognized as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI).

The overall scope led by Worley includes engineering, permitting, inspections, documentation review, and schedule and cost monitoring, as well as the supervision and management of engineering, procurement, and commissioning contractors.

StreamTec has been appointed to lead the permitting scope and provide specialised expertise in offshore construction and materials.

They are providing EPC-management services across all project phases, including the project development phase, the planning phase, as well as the execution phase.

By 2030, AquaDuctus will connect the first large hydrogen wind farm site, SEN-1, with a generation capacity of approximately 1 GW. The pipeline will transport at a length of approximately 200 kilometers green hydrogen produced from offshore wind to the German mainland and from there to European consumers via onshore hydrogen infrastructure.

In the next project stage, AquaDuctus will be extended to the remote areas of the German exclusive economic zone (EEZ), connecting additional future hydrogen wind farm sites. Along its way, the project will provide interconnection points with the opportunity for linking of adjacent national offshore hydrogen infrastructures originating from North Sea countries for Europe-wide offshore hydrogen transport by pipeline.
