Sungdong Clinches Five Suezmaxes

Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has won an order to build up to five Suezmax tankers for an undisclosed European customer.

Under the deal, Sungdong has received a firm order for three 158,000 DWT and two optional tankers, worth a total of USD 330 million, local media report.

The vessels, featuring 277 meters in length, 48 meters in breadth, and 23.1 meters in height, are slated for delivery by 2017.

The shipyard has been on a winning streak after its restructuring, having secured a dozen orders for Suezmaxes since April 2014, including the most recent ones from Nordic American Tankers and Tsakos Energy Navigation.

In addition, Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering agreed with Scorpio Bulkers at the end of January this year to convert two Capesize vessels, under construction at the yard, into two LR2 product tankers that are held for sale.
