Third Triple-E, the MARY MAERSK Delivered

Maersk Line’s third Triple-E container ship, the MARY MAERSK, has been delivered from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s (DSME) shipyard in Okpo, South Korea.

Called the ‘Triple-E’ class for the three main purposes behind their creation — economy of scale, energy efficiency and higher degree of eco-friendliness — the ships set a new industry benchmark for size and fuel efficiency. With unique design features for slower speeds and maximum efficiency, the vessels will emit 50% less CO2 per container moved than the current average on the Asia-Europe route.

At four-hundred metres long, 59 metres wide and 73 metres high, the 18,000 TEU (twenty-foot container) capacity of the ‘Triple-E’ is 16 percent greater (2,500 containers) than today’s largest container vessel. In total, Maersk ordered 20 Triple-E vessels all to be delivered over the next couple of years.

The fourth ship in the series is scheduled for delivery sometime this month.
