Thorco Crown Vessel Disabled off Port aux Basques

The general cargo vessel Thorco Crown was disabled off the coast of Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador, after it reportedly suffered a fire in the engine room.

Following the incident, the ship was left powerless some 32 nautical miles off Port aux Basques.

According to AIS data provided by MarineTraffic, Thorco Crown is still in the area, however, there is no immediate danger to the crew, the ship or the environment, the Canadian Coast Guard informed.

Coast Guard assets, including the ice breaker CCGS Sir William Alexander, are on site and an environmental response team is monitoring the area.

At the time of the incident the 10,500 dwt ship was sailing from Canada’s Argentia to Montreal, where it was scheduled to arrive on February 9.

The authorities informed that the vessel’s owner has arranged to tow the disabled cargo ship on Wednesday.
