Tidal power-battery storage project consortium hopefuls unveiled

The members of the project consortium looking to combine tidal power with battery storage to provide consistent base load power to the grid from renewable energy have been unveiled.

Following yesterday’s announcement that the energy storage solutions company redT energy was selected to be the primary energy storage technology provider for a large-scale tidal generation project in the UK, the members of the consortium made up of European companies have offered more details on the project.

Namely, the Agence de développement pour la Normandie in France has selected the Edinburgh-based tidal energy developer Atlantis Resources to join the project consortium whose overarching goal is to provide base load equivalent power to grid at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

Other consortium members include redT energy, EMEC, Innosea, Energy Systems Catapult and Province Zeeland, according to Atlantis.

Commenting on the project, Lisa MacKenzie, Commercial and Marketing Manager at EMEC, said: “We have worked with partners from a number of countries on this application and we are really excited about the consortium that has come together, opening up further opportunities for EMEC in energy systems research and demonstration.

“However, this will be a highly competitive call, and our application is still to be reviewed and approved prior to us progressing with the project.”

To remind, redT energy said its 0.6MW, 3MWh redT flow machine system, has been selected for the project which remains subject to finance and formal contract awards.
