Tidal Lagoon Power (TLP), the developer behind the proposed Cardiff tidal lagoon project, has appointed JBA Consulting to undertake flood risk assessment work for the lagoon. JBA will evaluate the impact of the proposed lagoon on flood risk, in terms of both negative and positive impacts during the construction, operation and decommissioning phases.
Project TiME aimed at improving the understanding of the marine turbulence effect on tidal arrays in Scottish waters is entering the final stages of data analysis after the successful turbulence measurements surveys. Following the analysis of the data, industry guidance is expected to be released later this year, providing a unified framework for measuring, classifying and predicting the effect of turbulence on resource assessment, device design/operation and array yield.
As an active manager of the UK seabed, the Crown Estate has announced plans to simplify the process for awarding access rights for tidal and wave developers. Under the leasing programme that is being considered, new access rights to the seabed would be offered for wave and tidal test and small scale demonstration projects likely to be of less than 3 MW.
Basque Government has officially opened bimep marine platform for research, development, and operation of marine energy converters near the coastal town of Armintza, Spain. With a power generating capacity of 20 MW, bimep is a research infrastructure dedicated for demonstrating the technical and economic viability of marine energy converters prior to their large-scale commercialisation. Bimep investment costs have totalled to €22 million.
Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has deployed its PB40 PowerBuoy off the coast of New Jersey. The operational buoy will provide the company with key performance data to accelerate ongoing product commercialization and technology development efforts.
