Triangle brings Cliff Head well back online

Australia-based oil producer Triangle Energy has resumed production at the CH-13 well at the Cliff Head oil field located offshore Australia following a technical issue last March, which had caused the well to stop producing.

In March 2019, a technical issue associated with the downhole electric submersible pump in the well had occurred causing the CH-13 well to stop producing. Meanhile, the other four wells at the field continued producing.

The company said in August it would bring the CH-13 well back online in November, but that has not happened.

According to Triangle’s statement on Monday, the CH-13 well was returned to production on December 13, 2019, following the installation of an electric submersible pump (ESP) replacement. The well was tested over the weekend.

The steady-state production rate for the field is currently 970bopd with the CH-13 well producing 150bopd.

The ESP is currently being brought up to full speed over the next two weeks and the field total production optimized over the coming month. Total field production is expected to exceed 1000bopd.

The company said it had completed a program of works to review the methodology of ESP replacement. The successful resumption of production on the CH-13 well validates the company’s decision to move to an alternative system for workover operations, ESP design, and replacement.

The company believes that this change will deliver an increase in the well uptime that arises from being positioned to maintain inventory and reduce turn around time post an ESP failure and a significant reduction in capital expenditure on future workovers of the Cliff Head wells.

The company has optimized performance from the other four producing wells at Cliff Head and has averaged 779 bopd over the period CH-13 has been offline.

The Triangle Energy-operated Cliff Head oil field is located in the Perth Basin about 270 kilometers north of Perth and 12 kilometers off the coast of Dongara in Western Australia, at a water depth of 15-20 meters.

The field is produced via an offshore platform connected to the onshore Arrowsmith Stabilisation Plant by twin 14km production and injection pipelines. Crude oil is trucked to BP at its Kwinana refinery south of Perth.
