UK - Bravery of Costa Concordia Crew Highlighted at Lloyd’s List Awards

The “bravery and professionalism” of the crew of the Costa Concordia cruise ship which struck a reef off the Italian coast earlier this year was cited by Lloyd’s Register’s David Barrow at the Lloyd’s List Global Awards in London last night.

Presenting the crew with the Seafarer of the Year Award, sponsored by Lloyd’s Register, Barrow, LR’s Marine Business Manager UK, Ireland and SW Europe, said while the “tragic loss of life caused by this regrettable incident will rightly be the subject of forensic investigations for some time to come, it should not be forgotten that without the skilled response of the majority of the crew, the loss of life could have been far higher”.

Meanwhile a Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust (LRET)-sponsored vodcast project, Alert!, won the Nautical Institute the Training Award category at the awards. The vodcast’s aim is to improve awareness of the human element in the maritime industry.

Lloyd’s Register also featured in a third category at the event as one of four finalists in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award. The LR maxim is: “Lloyd’s Register embodies CSR in all its activities by supporting safer, cleaner and more efficient shipping. Independent, impartial, beholden to no government and with no beneficial shareholders, Lloyd’s Register’s entire purpose and responsibility is to benefit the global stakeholders and marine communities it serves.”
