UK: Shell Expert Becomes Keynote Speaker at SPE ICoTA European Well Intervention Conference

Energy experts will gather next week at the 17th SPE ICoTA European Well Intervention Conference to discuss the important role innovative technology has in the future of the North Sea.

Stuart Brown, Shell’s Global Well Intervention Discipline Lead, is a keynote speaker at the event. Mr Brown has spent 35 years in the industry and 33 with Shell, initially working offshore on various subsea and platform drilling and completion projects and latterly promoting new technologies.

During his address on the first morning of the conference (Tuesday 15th) he will discuss how the correct implementation of new technology can help ensure the future of the North Sea energy industry.

The event, ‘Ensuring a North Sea Future Through Well Intervention’ takes place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on November 15 and 16 and encompasses the full range of well intervention practices including coiled tubing, slickline, e-line, LWI and hydraulic workover as well as specialist tools and solutions.

During the presentation, Mr Brown will discuss past and future levels of investment in the North Sea and identify the different factors that contribute to this level of investment. This will include Shell’s plans and approaches to industry issues and his opinions of what the future holds for the sector.

“The days of ‘easy oil and gas’ are over and innovative solutions are required to meet the world’s growing demand for energy. There is a need to tackle the problems surrounding the introduction of new technology by overcoming the barriers that exist.

“The whole sector needs to come together to address the issues facing the industry to help ensure that the North Sea continues to flourish as a source of energy in the years ahead.”

A pre-conference course is also being held this year on November 14 called ‘Unconventional Reservoirs – shale gas and CBM, heavy oil, HP-HT, advanced well construction, stimulation.’

The course provides an introduction to a series of topics that relate to modern reservoir development and are at the forefront of technology for many leading operating and well services companies.

The pre-conference course leader, Cameron Laing of Laing Engineering & Training Services said: “The pre-conference short course is a fantastic opportunity for engineers and technical support staff who wish to broaden their knowledge and position themselves to take advantage of the unusual opportunities that become available in a high oil price environment.

“SPE and ICOTA members have worked together to deliver a program that should be of interest to our members and provide another valuable opportunity for professionals all across this sector of the industry to enhance their technical and professional competence.”

The two-day conference also includes presentations and case studies from Shell, BP, Expro, Chevron, Schlumberger and Weatherford. Westhill-based Red Spider is exhibiting at the round table event with its suite of Remote Open Close Technology products that have built a reputation for delivering major cost savings and reduced risk for operators. The company has also been short-listed for the SPE ICoTA Innovation Award being announced during the event on Tuesday 15th.
