US DoE, WES team up for wave energy workshop

The US Department of Energy (DoE) and Wave Energy Scotland (WES) are organizing a joint workshop on wave energy converters (WEC) system requirements and performance metrics.

The goal of the workshop is to reach out to the wider wave energy community to facilitate input into the important specification of WEC system requirements and the formulation of performance metrics.

The workshop contributes to the system requirement specification and technology performance level (TPL) developments in the Structured Innovation project at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), and progresses the definition of performance metrics to be used in the stage gate funding approach by WES.

The system requirement specification lists the wave energy problem statement of the functions that the technology has to fulfill in all its life phases and under the corresponding environmental conditions.

Its correct formulation and close adherence to this ensure that the processes of invention, development, design, build and operation are on target and deliver high value WEC technology.

Appropriate performance metrics are required at all stages of the development in order to be able to assess the techno-economic performance potential of a given WEC technology when fully developed and operated under commercial conditions.

The workshop is aimed at technology developers, supporting OEMs, certifying bodies as well as the private investment and financing community and public funding bodies.

It will take place as side event of International Conference on Ocean Energy (ICOE) 2016, on February 26, 2016, at Edinburgh International Conference Center (EICC).
