Corps Announces Morehead City Harbor Dredging Plan

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has introduced a plan for the maintenance dredging project in the Morehead City Harbor Cutoff, Carteret County, North Carolina.

The work will consist of removal and disposal of shoaled material that has accumulated in the channels since they were last dredged. The dredging may be performed by a mechanical dredge (clamshell, dragline or dipper).

Dredging depth is 45 feet plus 2 feet of allowable overdepth. Disposal of dredged material will be in the Nearshore Placement Area.

Efforts are currently underway to obtain an extension of the environmental window beyond 30 April for disposal in the Nearshore Placement Area. If weather and/or wave conditions prohibit safe disposal in the Nearshore Placement Area, the Contractor will be allowed to place dredged material in the Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS).

However there will be a limit on the number of loads allowed to be placed in the ODMDS. The quantity of material to be dredged, including allowable overdepth, is estimated to be approximately 500,000 cubic yards.

Magnitude of this project is between $1,000,000.00 and $5,000,000.00.
