USA: St. Johns Riverkeeper Concerned Over Dredging Project

St. Johns Riverkeeper Concerned Over Dredging Project

On October 24, 2013, St. Johns Riverkeeper and Florida Wildlife Federation submitted comments regarding the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed dredging of the St. Johns River.

St. Johns Riverkeeper has serious concerns that:

– The impacts to the river are being significantly underestimated;

– The economic and environmental risks have been ignored or downplayed;

– The projected economic benefits have been dramatically overstated by Jaxport and some of its partners;

– Relevant information and facts have been excluded from the analysis and/or public debate.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is currently studying the proposal to dredge the St. Johns River from 40 to 47-feet to accommodate larger ships.
