USS Carl Vinson Pier-Side Overhaul Finished at PSNS & IMF

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) completed a pier-side overhaul with USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) Feb. 3.

Vinson wrapped up a six-month, approximately 350,000 man-day pier-side overhaul and has readied the ship for critical missions to support the fleet.

“The integrated project team, consisting of PSNS & IMF, Vinson’s ship’s force, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Southwest Regional Maintenance Center and contractors, overcame numerous challenges to effectively deliver this carrier back to the fleet,” said Capt. James Lee, PSNS & IMF operations officer. “The availability was a tremendous success and truly a team effort.”

Major work items included upgrades to turbine generators, piping insulation improvements, condenser inspections and pump and motor replacements.

This is the first extended maintenance period for the CVN 70 since it was refueled at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia. The team captured lessons learned from portions of this project to assist others during future availabilities.

PSNS & IMF is one of four NAVSEA public shipyards that play a major role in maintaining America’s fleet and providing wartime surge capability to keep the nation’s ships ready for combat.
