VIDEO: Statoil Cat J rigs on their way to Norway

Norwegian oil giant Statoil is preparing to welcome the first of the two high-spec Cat J jack-up rigs built by Samsung Heavy Industries.

According to a video shared by the oil firm, the first of the two Cat-J rigs – the Askeladden- is is set to reach Norway next week.

A few weeks later, the second rig Askepott will reach Norway as well.

As they are too large for the Suez channel, their journey from South Korea has gone around South Africa.

The rigs are being carried to Norway by the Dockwise Blue Marlin and OHT Hawk vessels.

“Their final destinations are the Gullfaks and Oseberg fields, but first we look forward to seeing them in the Coast Center Base in Bergen, Norway,” Statoil said

Ordered in 2013, the new category J rigs will be able to operate in harsh environments at water depths from 70 to 140 meters and drill wells with lengths up to 10,000 meters. The primary use will be drilling and completion of production wells.
