West Australian Ports Bracing for Cyclone

Australia’s Mid West Ports Authority closed the Geraldon port to all shipping, commercial operations and activities at 6 pm local time today, in preparation for the potential impact of Cyclone Olwyn, expected to produce winds of up to 90km/hour by midnight tonight local time.

The port said it will work closely with the local emergency management authorities for the duration of the cyclone.

The resumption of normal commercial operations and activities will be dependent on the impact of the weather on the region and the ‘All Clear’ being given by the appropriate authorities.

Earlier this week, Pilbara Ports Authority had cleared its West Australian ports Dampier and Ashburton of all large vessels ahead of the expected cyclone.

The port of Port Hedland has remained open.
