Westermo’s ODW-710 Products Get DNV Marine Approval

Westermo announces that its ODW-710 products, that allows a profibus DP network to be converted to a fibre optic solution, now has the DNV Marine approval. This means that networks running at the highest data rates can be stretched beyond the 200m maximum range of a copper network.

The units support the standard Profibus DP 9 pin D-sub connector and can auto detect data rates up to 12Mbit/sec. Built into a compact DIN rail mount housing the unit is incredibly easy to install and configure. Power can be provided by a DC source of between 10 and 60V and the units can operate between temperatures of -40 to +70 C.

There are two models, the F1 which allows a simple point to point connection and the F2 which allows for the creation of a resilient ring solution. The ODW-710 models both can be configured with SFP (short form pluggable) transceivers meaning a range of solutions can be offered depending on the type of fibre optic cable. A BiDi (Bi-Directional) transceiver can for instance be utilized when only a single fibre core is available.

The ODW is simple to install being small and with a simple integral DIN rail clip. The standard Profibus DP connector plugs straight onto the 9 pin D-sub and the unit automatically detects the data rate so no configuration is needed. The comprehensive LEDs provide a quick and easy way of detecting any network problems that may be encountered.

These products are a great addition to Westermo’s comprehensive range of managed and unmanaged Ethernet switches and serial device servers, Ethernet extenders and media converters for maritime use. All products in this segment have been fully tested and certified by DNV (Det Norske Veritas) allowing them to be used within many offshore and shipboard systems like propulsion, dynamic positioning, bridge control, alarm management and observation systems.
