Japan’s JGC nabs Prelude FLNG contract, says commissioning of the unit “well underway”

Japan-based engineering company, JGC Corporation said it has secured a contract for the world’s largest floating LNG producer, Shell’s Prelude FLNG.

The contract has been awarded to JGC by Shell’s Australian unit and its partners in the Prelude FLNG project.

Under the deal, JGC will provide the construction management and completion support services for the floating LNG unit, the company said in a statement on Friday.

Since the final investment decision for the FLNG project was made in May, 2011, European and Korean contractors have executed engineering, procurement and construction of the facility.

Module installation work for the FLNG has also been completed at Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard in South Korea.

“And now, construction work is in its final stages and commissioning well and truly underway,” JGC said in its statement.

Shell Australia has contracted JGC to support the completions work for the FLNG’s “safe and on-schedule completion.”

With 488m in length and 74m in width, Shell’s Prelude FLNG is the largest facility of its kind.

Once completed at SHI’s Geoje shipyard, the FLNG facility will be towed to the Prelude gas field offshore Western Australia.

The FLNG is expected to stay moored at the Prelude gas field for 25 years, and is expected to produce 3.6 mtpa of LNG, 1.3 mtpa of condensate and 0.4 mtpa of LPG for export.
