Fugro fortifies Asian presence by setting up remote operations shop in Malaysia

Business Developments & Projects

Dutch geo-data specialist Fugro has taken a step to expand its footprint in Southeast Asia with the launch of its new remote operations center (ROC) in Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur, which is anticipated to enable the Netherlands-headquartered giant’s personnel to control offshore survey operations remotely.

While announcing the strengthening of its regional offshore operations through the establishment of a ROC in Kuala Lumpur, Fugro explained that the new communications hub would allow its experts to remotely manage offshore survey operations, delivering “safer, more efficient, and more sustainable projects.”

Commenting on this, Mark Wilson, Fugro APAC Business Line Director-Marine Asset Integrity, emphasized: “Establishing the Kuala Lumpur ROC reflects our focus on being closer to our clients and strengthening local partnerships.

“Located in Malaysia’s capital city, the ROC is supported by the city’s robust communications infrastructure and growing pipeline of skilled talent. By combining our global expertise in remote operations with Malaysia’s strong talent pool, we can deliver more responsive, customer-centred solutions.”

According to the Dutch player, the KL ROC will create employment opportunities by allowing some offshore positions to be converted into onshore roles, unlocking the potential to attract what is considered to be a broader, more diverse workforce.

In addition, this move is expected to gradually ease challenges usually associated with offshore roles, such as work-life balance, safety, and shiftwork, as more positions become available onshore. An open house on November 26 marked the launch of the facility, welcoming clients and government officials to gain a better understanding of its capabilities.

The firm highlighted: “Fugro’s investment in the ROC will also result in expanded training capacity. The company can now onboard and develop talent more effectively, as it will be freed from the space constraints of earlier offshore arrangements.

“By bringing these roles onshore, Fugro can accelerate workforce development while upholding the same high standards of project delivery and operational integrity.”

Fugro elaborates that the KL ROC’s setup draws from experience gained from its ROC in Perth, Australia, a facility it claims has set a global benchmark for remote and autonomous operations.

The opening of the new ROC in Asia comes shortly after the Dutch giant finished geophysical and archaeological surveys to support the development of a 330 MW offshore wind farm in Europe.
