Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool another vessel richer as Tallink turns to bio-LNG

Gasum, a Nordic gas sector and energy market player, has struck a pooling and liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) deal with Elenger, said to be the largest privately owned energy company in the Baltic-Finnish region and Tallink’s fuel provider. This enables a shuttle vessel to run on bio-LNG and yield additional compliance surplus for Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool.

Thanks to this pooling and bio-LNG agreement with Elenger, Tallink’s MyStar vessel will run on bio-LNG to generate additional compliance surplus for Gasum’s pool, as the duo has signed a FuelEU Maritime co-operation agreement, which is a European Union regulation aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the maritime sector.

This regulation, which establishes increasingly stringent requirements for the carbon intensity of energy used by ships operating in and out of EU ports, encourages the adoption of cleaner fuels, compelling shipping companies to transition away from traditional fossil fuels towards lower-emission energy sources such as LNG and bio-LNG.

Jacob Granqvist, VP of Maritime at Gasum, commented: “We are very happy to welcome Tallink MyStar into the Gasum FuelEU Maritime pool as a compliance generator. Because of this agreement with Elenger and Tallink, we are able to strengthen our FuelEU Maritime pool with yet another vessel, expanding our ability to support our customers in need of compliance. As the end of the year draws closer, we are doing our best to secure as much compliance as possible.”

Gasum, which provides Elenger with bio-LNG from its Pori terminal, has recently started publishing the daily price of its compliance units per ton of CO2 emitted. Tallink Group operates a total of 11 passenger and cargo vessels on routes between Estonia, Finland, and Sweden.

Margus Kaasik, CEO of Elenger, said: “Tallink is setting an example for other operators in the Baltic Sea. Tallink was one of the first to invest in new technology and began using LNG as early as 2017. Elenger has supported them throughout this journey providing and bunkering LNG to the vessels, and we are happy to help take the next step now toward renewable bio-LNG.”

Pooling is said to offer a cost-effective way for shipping companies to meet the regulation, enabling the balancing of the fuel use of vessels that cannot utilize LNG or bio-LNG with those that can. By joining a compliance pool, multiple vessels or companies can collectively meet the FuelEU Maritime requirements.

Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool is perceived to stand out in the market due to its reliability, as the Norwegian player can guarantee the availability of low-emission fuel to the pool, taking full responsibility for the compliance of all pooled vessels.
