Box Volumes Keep Soaring at HHLA Terminals

German terminal operator Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) saw an 8.1 percent surge year-over-year in its container volumes in the 2017 financial year.

HHLA’s box volumes soared to 7.2 million standard containers (TEU) in 2017 from 6.7 million TEU handled in the previous year.

At the three container terminals in Hamburg, container throughput increased by 8.3 percent to 6.9 million TEU. Additionally, throughput at the container terminal in Odessa increased slightly by 3.4 percent to 0.3 million TEU.

HHLA’s intermodal transport volume also rose by 5.2 percent to 1.5 million TEU in 2017 from 1.4 million TEU in 2016.

Revenue increased by more than 6 percent to EUR 1.25 billion (USD 1.53 billion) in the 2017 financial year, compared to EUR 1.18 billion seen a year earlier

Moreover, the group’s operating result (EBIT) stood at EUR 173 million in 2017, against EUR 164 million posted in 2016, an increase of more than 5 percent.

In 2017, the port logistics subgroup generated revenue of EUR 1.22 billion, compared to EUR 1.15 billion in 2016, and EBIT of EUR 156 million, against EUR 148 million reported in 2016.

“The positive course of business resulted not only from the strength of the global economy and global trade. It is also due to … our own endeavours that HHLA succeeded in consolidating and partly expanding its market position in the wake of the reorganisation of syndicate structures. This was supported by investments in our terminal facilities as well as by intensive sales activities and customer dialogues,” Angela Titzrath, Chairwoman of HHLA’s Executive Board, commented.

HHLA operates a total of four container terminals, including Altenwerder, Burchardkai, Tollerort and Odessa.
