Canada’s first large-scale export project sends off another LNG cargo

Business Developments & Projects

With another liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo out of the way, LNG Canada, a joint venture company encompassing Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, KOGAS, and Mitsubishi, has reached a new milestone at its giant LNG export terminal in Kitimat, Canada’s British Columbia.

Following LNG Canada’s first LNG cargo during the summer of 2025, the project started producing LNG from its second LNG processing train.

With Train 1 and Train 2 now operational on Canada’s west coast, the project’s greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity is said to be about 60% below the global average.

This project is enabling Canadian LNG to reach other parts of the world. The LNG undertaking recently marked the safe departure of the 25th cargo from the facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, in the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation.

LNG Canada highlighted: “This achievement was made possible thanks to thousands of highly skilled professionals working safely together each day.

“Together we’re shaping Canada’s LNG story – safely, reliably, and with care for our environment and communities as we produce secure supplies of LNG and help Canada diversify its export markets.”

The project’s strategic location on Canada’s Pacific Coast is perceived to connect cost-competitive upstream gas from British Columbia to growing Asian demand.

There is an option for a future Phase 2 expansion, which could entail the construction of two additional LNG trains, bringing total capacity to 28 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).

Canada has seven LNG export projects and one infrastructure project in various stages of development, representing a possible capital investment of almost $109 billion and a potential production capacity of 50.3 mtpa of LNG.
