Costa Concordia Parbuckling Update

Due to the many integrations produced in the last days by Costa Crociere, and the requests of additional documents put forward by public authorities, the Commissioner will ask the Council of Ministers for ten additional days – the deadline initially set for June 16 – for a more in-depth analysis of the project.

Costa Concordia Parbuckling UpdateThe first meeting of the Conferenza dei servizi was held in Rome at Civil Protection headquarters, chaired by the Commissioner for the Concordia Emergency Franco Gabrielli to examine the project presented by Costa Crociere for the transportation of the Concordia from Giglio Island to the port of Genoa for dismantling developed by the consortium made of the two companies Saipem-San Giorgio del Porto.

The administrative regions involved  have all expressed the need to have additional time to analyze the project in detail, especially with regards to risk assessments and proposed mitigation measures.

If the Commissioner’s request is accepted by the Government, the next Conferenza dei Servizi meeting will be on June 16, for an additional exchange on the technical elements that are still open, to then reach the date of the decision-making Conference – that will be indicated by the Council of Ministers – with the whole picture of authorizations, permissions and prescriptions.

In the meantime, the operations at Giglio island are progressing 24/7 with 360 technicians at work.

Currently 11 sponsons have been installed on the starboard side of the wreck and therefore there are still 4 to be positioned on the starboard side and 4 on the left side, to reach the total of 30 needed to refloat the wreck.

Environmental monitoring of sea water is still ongoing, and as confirmed by the regional tuscan environmental agency representative in the meeting today, no anomalies are registered.
