Damaged Sponson Transported to Concordia Removal Yard

The pontoon MAK has arrived this morning at the Concordia removal yard, the salvage company Titan Micoperi informed.

In the next hours technicians will proceed with the load of the S13 sponson that will then be transported to Genoa for repairs.

The sponson, which was the first to had been installed on the wreck within its refloating plan, collapsed on Wednesday. Fortunately, nobody was hurt when the incident occurred.

The loss of balance was attributed by the salvage company to to the movement of internal water within the sponson.

The sponson was restored to its horizontal position yesterday with the support of the Conquest crane and technicians on the site proceeded with operations to empty the sponson from ballast water.

Installation of the remaining sponsons will resume as soon as the Conquest crane becomes available again, Micoperi said yesterday.

“Repositioning of S13 will therefore be completed at a later stage,” the salvage company explained noting that the installation sequence foresees positioning of S10 as soon as possible.

Assessment of what Micoperi deemed as minor damages detected in the adjacent sponson (S12), caused by the sponson S13 during its rotation, was initiated as well.
