Danish company opts for sustainable steel for its floating renewable energy platforms

Danish company Floating Power Plant (FPP) has signed a letter of intent with a specialist in sustainable recycling of maritime materials Renable for the supply of recycled steel for its floating renewable energy platforms.

Under the letter of intent, Renable will supply FPP with the recycled steel needed for its first full-scale commercial demonstration project off the Canary Islands, ensuring that FPP can develop this project with a reduced climate impact compared to using normal steel.

Back in 2021, FPP signed an agreement with the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) to test its 5MW hybrid floating wind and wave energy platform in real sea environment, offshore the coast of Gran Canaria.

The company conducted trials on the scaled platform at IHCantabria research institute’s wave basin in 2022, that was overseen by the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) from Orkney which observed the behavior of FPP’s platform under misaligned winds and waves during the trials.

Anders Køhler, CEO of FPP, said: “We care a lot about the climate and reducing the CO2 emissions involved with the production and lifecycle of our technology is important to us. When we can choose sustainability at competitive prices, it just makes sense.”

FPP has developed a patented technology harvesting the limitless wind and wave energy of the ocean, to help drive the renewable energy transition forward.

FPP is commercializing its technology initially for dispatchable power-applications such as off-grid Power-to-X applications for different markets such as islands, and oil and gas installations.

This is made possible by the combination of wind and wave, and the possibility of offshore green hydrogen production on the floating platform as well.
