FSP LNG awarded licence to build LNG containment systems

Braemar LNG, a Braemar Shipping Services unit, informed it has issued a sub-licence for the design and construction of a new Flat-panel, Semi-membrane, Prismatic-shaped (FSP) containment system.

Under the terms of the licence it holds with General Dynamics NASSCO to utilise its patents in the design and construction of FSP LNG containment systems, it issued the sub-licence to FSP LNG, a joint venture company formed by Braemar, EnTX Tekmar and Jamestown Metal Marine Sales, the company said in a statement.

FSP technology has been developed for marine LNG transport and can also be used in a wide range of applications, including Floating Liquefaction, Floating Storage Units, Floating Storage Regasification Units and LNG marine fuel tanks.

The FSP system, a new Type B, LNG containment system, uses flat plate technology to overcome the issues associated with partial filling and sloshing.

It is designed to be constructed, outfitted, insulated and tested off-hull and lifted as a complete unit into the vessel while the vessel is still in the construction dock. This onshore construction process results in a significant reduction in vessel construction time, while maintaining the highest standards of construction quality.

The joint venture partners will, through Tank Tek and Hong Kong Tank Tek, take the FSP LNG containment system through the general approval requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and bring it to market.

Geoff Green, Managing Director of Braemar Engineering, said, “All aspects of the approval, testing and complete construction of the first commercial FSP Containment System are underway. This is the next important step on the road to bringing the FSP technology to market.”

Approval in Principle was obtained from both Lloyds Register (LR) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
