Commercial and Passenger Traffic Resumes at Port of Genoa, Italy

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS), the world’s leading maritime services provider, announced that commercial and passenger traffic has resumed at the Port of Genoa, Italy, following the tragic Jolly Nero accident which brought down the Control Tower on Tuesday night.

Commercial traffic resumed on the afternoon of May 9th as planned, with ferry and cruise traffic beforehand.

The death toll of the Jolly Nero accident, which brought down the Pilot Tower in Genoa, Italy has increased to seven people. Two people are still missing as the rescue operation continues.

According to Ansa news agency, the vessel’s “black box” has been seized by investigators and it is believed that the cause of the accident was some sort of a mechanical failure.

“The port of Genoa is experiencing a dramatic time, a moment of condolences, grief and support for the victims and their families as well as the wounded of the accident. This is one of the most painful events, this is the time to mourn, but also a moment of pride for this community, a great family of thirty thousand people.

We want to thank those who are close to us at this time, the people from the Government who participated in our pain and were also close to us in an authoritative way,” Luigi Merlo, President of the Port Authority of Genoa said in a release yesterday.
