M² Subsea, Frontera Offshore join forces on Gulf of Mexico project

Subsea services company M² Subsea has joined forces with Frontera Offshore to deliver remedial pipeline work for Permaducto in the Ku-Maloob-Zaap (KMZ) oilfield in the Bay of Campeche offshore Mexico.

M² said on Wednesday that this contract was the first award for the company in the Gulf of Mexico region.

The project will see personnel from M² Subsea’s Houston base onboard Frontera Offshore’s chartered multi-purpose support vessel (MPSV) Tehuana, to facilitate pre and post lay surveys for Frontera Offshore.

The survey work will be carried out along a 7.5 kilometers section of the KMZ-94 pipeline to be stabilized for the Mexican pipeline contractor Permaducto, a subsidiary of Grupo Protexa.

Two Triton work class ROVs will be deployed from the Tehuana to deliver the survey services, with 277 mattresses being installed at a depth of approximately 250 feet.

KMZ field

The Pemex-operated Ku-Maloob-Zaap is located off the coast of Campeche, 65 miles northeast of Ciudad del Carmen. It covers an area of 121 square kilometers and includes five fields: Ku, Maloob, Zaap, Bacab, Lum, and Zazil-Ha.

The Ku field was discovered in 1980, the Maloob field in 1984, and Zaap in 1991. First oil from the Ku field was produced in 1981.

The KMZ development included drilling 82 wells, the Yuum K’ak’ Naab (Lord of the Sea) FPSO, and 17 platforms: seven for drilling, four for production, four for accommodation, one for telecommunication, and one for processing. There are also 42 pipelines totaling 189 kilometers in length.
