Port of Gdansk Launches Tender for Polnocne Quay

Polish Port of Gdansk Authority (PGA) has launched a call for tenders in order to find a contractor for the expansion of the Polnocne Quay — one of the largest projects carried out by the port authority.

“The expanded Polnocne Quay will be used primarily for Ro-Ro transshipments. We are witnessing rapid growth in this area, particularly in the transshipments of commercial vehicles. Compared to 2016, the year 2017 ended with a result better by 400%. Our task is to adjust the infrastructure to the needs and development of the market,” Lukasz Greinke, President of the PGA, said.

As informed, the contractor will be responsible for the construction of a parking section of the quay with bottom reinforcement, a universal section of the quay with infrastructure, a Ro-Ro ramp, and a transshipment section of the quay along with infrastructure and a closing section. The contractor’s tasks will also include demolition of some existing structures in the area of the silting field, dredging work, construction of the quay infrastructure with external networks, and obtaining the occupancy permit.

PGA has received funds for the investment from the Connecting Europe Facility, within the framework of the CEF Blending priority.

“Even though the first recruitment for CEF Blending was a pilot one with a rather complicated structure, our application for the programme was a success, thanks to which the project received a 20% subsidy from the EU,” Jowita Zielinkiewicz, Head of the Department of Innovation and Fund Acquisition at the PGA, explained.

The subsidy is worth EUR 20 million, while the remaining funds for the construction come from the PGA’s own budget. The total cost of the investment is estimated at about PLN 400 million.

Potential contractors have until the end of July to submit their tenders. Construction work is expected to start this year and complete in 2020.

Last month, PGA signed an agreement with the consortium made up of the Projmors Designing Office For Maritime Structures Company Limited and Mosty Gdansk for the development of the Central Port concept, a flagship investment at the port. The consortium will develop the concept within the coming ten months.

Ultimately, several terminals with various purposes, including a bulk cargo terminal, a general cargo terminal, a passenger terminal, and a terminal for the Ro-Ro type of cargo are to be constructed over an area of about 500 ha.
