Russian Icebreakers Keeping Busy

Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers “Yamal” and “Vaygach” started their escorting of icebreaker “Kapitan Khlebnikov” and tanker “Yaroslav the Wise” as of July 15, 2014 from the port of Pevek, the owner Atomflot said in a release.

 
The ships are heading towards the Kara Sea, in what is the first icebreaking mission from east to west in this year’s summer-autumn season.

Earlier nuclear icebreakers of Rosatomflot jointly assisted on the Kara Sea – the East Siberian Sea route a convoy consisting of tankers “Indigo” and “Varzuga” of Murmansk Shipping Company, as well as a diesel-powered icebreaker Tor Viking.

The nuclear-powered icebreaker “Taimyr” on July 15 began icebreaking assistance and ice reconnaissance in the license area “Vostochno-Prinovozemelsky-1”, owned by Rosneft. The customer is Karmorneftegaz, a sister company of Rosneft and ExxonMobil.

The Taimyr will be doing this job for nearly 20 days.
