Samsung Heavy Seals $580m Deal

Samsung Heavy Industries’ (SHI) first order for the year is for five 14,400TEU container ships – worth about $580 million.

The shipbuilder said in a regulatory filing yesterday that it has signed a contract with an unnamed European owner for the construction of five state-of-the-art boxships.

According to the filing, delivery of the vessels is scheduled for 2016.

Since it launched the shipbuilding business, Samsung Heavy Industries has received orders for 1,056 ships (as of June 30, 2013). Its world-leading technological excellence is proven by its successful delivery of 924 units of ships.

In particular, SHI has led the market for high-tech ships with high added value, securing the No. 1 market share with its LNG carriers and ultra-large container ships. It has also obtained an unbeatable position in the innovative new ship markets, proven by its development of the world’s first bi-directional Arctic shuttle tankers.
