SCA Gets Prevention Prize 2013

Responsible for repair and maintenance work at HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder, SCA (Service Center Altenwerder), has received its ‘Prevention Prize 2013’ from the Trade & Goods Distribution Mutual Society (BGHW). The prize is for a mobile anti-fall structure developed by HHLA staffer Uwe Soltwischlte.

The basic idea is to erect a fence about 1.5 metres high on the edge of the quay during maintenance operations on the waterside drive of container gantry cranes, the object being to protect SCA staff engaged on the work from falling into the water. Until now workers had had to wear life-jackets and safety harnesses, which seriously hampered their mobility.

The awards ceremony in Bremen on 6 November was attended by Henning Verstege, SCA’s Operations Manager, inventor Uwe Soltwisch and Yves Jacobs, a member of the maintenance team. Presenting the prize, Dr. Rainhardt von Leoprechting, Chairman of the BGHW Management Board, said: “With our Prevention Prize, we aim to recognize outstanding performance by our member companies in promoting innovations and improvements in health and safety at work on their own initiative.

The BGHW has introduced the prize-winning achievements by the winners of its main prizes in brief videos.
