Shell’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel is heading towards Europe after leaving STX Offshore & Shipbuilding’s yard in South Korea, at least that is what the shipping data shows.

The 6,500-cbm LNG bunkering vessel named Cardissa left the STX yard last week and was on Friday located in the South China Sea, according to the marine data provider VesselsValue.

Shell previously indicated that the LNG bunkering vessel could start operations in its home port, the port of Rotterdam, this summer.

The vessel will load the chilled fuel from the third berth at the Dutch Gate LNG terminal in Rotterdam and deliver it to LNG-powered ships in northwest Europe.

It is excepted to be able of fuelling about 1,000 cubes of LNG per hour.

The Cardissa is one of Europe’s first LNG bunkering ships with Shell claiming it is the biggest seagoing vessel of its kind.

The vessel was officially named at a ceremony held at the STX yard on June 1.

“We look forward to the bunker vessel as it will complement the LNG services available around the Rotterdam area,” Stefaan Adriaens, Commercial Manager at the Gate terminal told LNG World News on Friday.

LNG World News also invited Shell to comment on the arrival of the LNG bunkering vessel. We will update the article once we receive a response.
