TKS to build Jamaica’s Old Harbour LNG-fueled power plant

Spanish engineering company TKS has been contracted to build the LNG-fueled 190 MW combined cycle plant for a value of over 220 million euros for the Jamaican power utility JPS.

The facility will be capable of operating on LNG and diesel, will use a seawater cooling system and will be the largest of its kind in Jamaica, according to TKS.

The plant will be located in the fishing village of Old Harbour Bay about 70 kilometers west of the capital Kingston, replacing an existing plant powered by fuel oil.

JPS, through its subsidiary, South Jamaica Power Company (SJPC), finalized an agreement with General Electric for the manufacturing of equipment for the LNG-fueled power plant.

New Fortress Energy, the company contracted to supply LNG for Jamaica’s 120-megawatt power plant in Bogue, Montego Bay, has also been awarded the LNG supply deal for the Old Harbour Bay facility.

According to the deal, New Fortress Energy has agreed to privately finance and develop the infrastructure necessary to deliver LNG to the new Old Harbour plant, JPS said in an earlier statement.
