Tugs Free Grounded Maersk Garonne

The container ship Maersk Garonne, which ran aground while entering the Fremantle Inner Harbour on Saturday, February 28th, was pulled free.

The 62,000-tonne vessel was stuck in soft sand about 500 metres off South Mole.

The vessel was pulled free by tugs at about 8.30am on the same day and went to anchor in Gage Roads to be assessed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

Initial reports from the vessel indicate that there were no injuries or damage to the vessel.

A full investigation of the incident by the relevant authorities is underway, AMSA informed.
