Türkiye bolsters its LNG arsenal as BOTAŞ pens two ten-year deals with SEFE and Eni

Türkiye’s state-owned Boru Hatları ile Petrol Taşıma Anonim Şirketi (BOTAŞ) has inked two long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) agreements with Italy’s energy giant Eni and Germany’s Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) to ensure the country’s energy security.

Thanks to these long-term LNG supply agreements with Eni and SEFE, Türkiye’s giant will get 11 billion cubic meters of gas, with the aim of increasing the diversity of the country’s supply sources and becoming an energy hub.

The signing ceremony for the agreement with SEFE was held under the auspices of Alparslan Bayraktar, Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, with Abdulvahit Fidan, BOTAŞ Chairman and Managing Director, and Jean Manuel Conil-Lacoste, SEFE’s Vice President, in attendance.

With deliveries set to begin in 2028, the German firm will deliver LNG equivalent to approximately 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas to BOTAŞ during the winter months alone, for ten years.

“The agreement, which will significantly contribute to BOTAŞ’s long-term supply planning and commercial capabilities, represents a significant step in the long-term strategic cooperation between the two state-owned companies, following the medium-term contract signed between the two companies in September,” emphasized Türkiye’s player.

As another ten-year LNG purchase agreement was also signed with Eni, deliveries are slated to begin in 2028. This will see BOTAŞ receive LNG equivalent to 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas over the next ten winter periods.

The signing ceremony was conducted in the presence of Bayraktar, Fidan, and Cristian Signoretto, Eni’s Global Natural Gas and LNG Portfolio Director. BOTAŞ is increasing its cooperation with global companies to leverage the flexibility and capitalize on commercial opportunities, strengthening its active presence in the energy world.

To this end, the firm recently struck a heads of agreement with Woodside Energy to provide liquefied natural gas, mostly coming from a project under development in Louisiana, after its deal with Mercuria laid the groundwork to get 4 billion cubic meters (cbm) of natural gas equivalent of LNG per year, with deliveries scheduled to start in 2026 and continue until the end of 2045.

Commenting on the latest agreements, Bayraktar underlined: “This agreement we signed with Eni will significantly contribute to meeting our country’s growing winter demand under planned, predictable, and favorable commercial and operational conditions, thanks to our increased access to international LNG supplies as a result of our investments in LNG terminals in recent years.

“This agreement is a significant step in BOTAŞ’s recently accelerated efforts to ensure supply and price security, and it also enhances the company’s commercial capabilities.”
