UK: Dawson Energy Appoints Senior Operations Manager

Dawson Energy, part of Great Yarmouth-based 3sun Group which provides specialist products and services to the energy industry, has announced the appointment of Martin Roberts as senior operations manager.

In this newly created position at Dawson Energy, which provides skilled teams of technicians for the installation, commissioning, operations, maintenance and inspection of wind turbines both on and offshore, Mr Roberts will be responsible for developing the Group’s offshore wind portfolio.

Originally from Lowestoft, he brings over 12 years of energy industry experience to the company. He joins Dawson from Gamesa Offshore Service where he held the position of offshore operations and maintenance manager and prior to that worked with Vestas Offshore UK Ltd for seven years, latterly as senior site supervisor on the Scroby Sands Offshore Wind Farm.

Graham Hacon, managing director at 3sun Group, said: “Martin’s extensive knowledge and technical expertise will be an excellent addition to the company as we continue to expand our capabilities into the global renewables industry. We have known each other since he worked at Gamesa and I am confident that he will be an indispensable member of the team.

”Martin will take on a range of key responsibilities which will ensure the company’s offshore operations continue to grow and run efficiently and safely. His previous involvement in maintenance and site supervision make him a well-matched candidate for our needs.

“Martin will help develop the Group’s knowledge of offshore O&M operations particularly with the use of support vessels in an effort to provide clients with a one stop shop solution for offshore wind O&M. It is hoped the addition of Martin will see current contracts extended and modified leading to a planned increase in turnover of £1,000,000 per annum in its first year alone,” continued Graham.

Martin said: “3sun Group has an impressive reputation as a highly-skilled and dynamic company making this an exciting move for me. It is a well-respected company both locally and within the industry but what is most attractive to me is the emphasis which Graham and the team places on safety and improving standards in the industry.

“There are long term plans in place to open up an operations and maintenance base in Great Yarmouth to further expand our service offering and to open up our services to different industries, including companies operating in the marine sectors. I look forward to taking on the new responsibilities and challenges that this role offers and contributing to the success of the company,” he continued.

Mr Roberts started his career with an apprenticeship in plating at Richards Shipbuilders in Lowestoft. He then joined K.Y.E. Ltd. Crowne Works as a plater and pipefitter before joining SLP Engineering and then Amec where he held similar positions working on oil and gas related construction projects. Before joining Gamesa he worked with Alpine Fabrications Services as fabricator, working on rig supply vessel maintenance, and design and fabrication of upgrades.

3sun Group comprises 3sun, a supplier of instrument and control products and services, 3sun Inspection Services which offers a full range of equipment inspection and testing services in the renewables sector at present and Oban-based Dawson Energy, an industry leader in delivering installation, maintenance and inspection services for wind turbines.

3sun Group is headquartered in Great Yarmouth, England, and also has a base in Oban, Scotland. 3sun recently opened new bases in Aberdeen and in Bergen, Norway to support on-going rapid growth and is currently looking at other UK and overseas locations.

3sun Group employs 175 staff offshore and onshore and is currently working on several projects in the UK and Europe. The Group has extensive overseas experience having worked in Europe, Asia, Africa, USA and New Zealand.
