UK: MV Hoy Head Lengthening Project Progresses on Schedule

MV Hoy Head Lengthening Project Progresses on Schedule

In January 2013, the m.v. Hoy Head lengthening at Cammell Laird has progressed with the new 13.8m section now in place bringing her total length up to 53.30m with a passenger capacity of 125 persons, the increased deck area will also allow for a greater car load capacity.

The lengthening will include an additional bow thruster, new azimuthing propeller units and improvements to the crew accommodation with larger stores, dry locker, galley and messing facilities. The work will increase the car capacity from 14 to 24 cars or for up to three 16.5m HGVs and 7 cars. This will mean the vessel will have the highest load capacity in the Orkney Ferries fleet.

As well as increasing capacity, the £2.7m project will upgrade the propulsion and control systems and improve the manoeuvrability and carbon footprint of the vessel. Although the scope for improvement is limited, the opportunity is also being taken to update the passenger accommodation.
