USA: Contract Awarded for Levee Work in Mount Prospect

Contract Awarded for Levee Work in Mount Prospect

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Chicago District, awarded a contract in the amount of $2.4 million on Aug. 31, 2013, to Fuel Tank Maintenance Company LLC to fill in levee gaps in Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights, Ill. Fuel Tank Maintenance Company LLC is certified as a small business concern.

The firm-fixed-price construction contract is for work on Levee 37 that extends from Euclid Avenue to Palatine Road. This contract includes small closure structures for pipes crossing the line of protection – adding 135 feet of floodwall along Milwaukee Avenue and closing a regulated 600-foot gap in the levee following construction completion of compensatory storage. Work on non-gap related features is scheduled to begin later this fall.

The compensatory storage facility constructed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago consists of three separate storage basins near Wolf Road at Heritage Park in Wheeling and will provide the necessary 120-acre feet of storage to offset the impact of building Levee 37.

Some of the storage basins are designed to be used as soccer, baseball and softball fields when not used to store water. The project also includes other improvements to Heritage Park, including a band shelter and concession stand for the sports complex.

Work was coordinated through Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Office of Water Resources; Illinois Department of Transportation; City of Prospect Heights; and Village of Mount Prospect.

Construction of the gap closure is expected to begin in spring 2014, in conjunction with availability of compensatory storage. Construction of all items in the contract is expected to be completed by January 2015.

This project is a part of the larger USACE Des Plaines River Study flood risk management project.
